Superior!?… my a…..
The latest selections of posts by Professor Landis betray what seems to be an affinity to the privileged. We first have a post presenting one of the most privileged people within the regime and who is a zero entity among the fractious opposition circles as the uniquely qualified person to hold Syria together.
Then comes a classical “Assad-the-enigmatic” style apologist post. Combining the professor’s reading of a Syria-experts, and that of Nir Rosen who, like many well-connected Syria specialists and insiders, continue to play the old bad melody of Assad the a reluctant murderer doing what he does because his sect wants him to stay in power in fear of losing privilege. The post, of course, attempts to inform us, in no uncertain term that all will be hell if this murderer and his gang lose power, and that Assad is viewed as the “superior” alternative to chaos.
Notwithstanding the very bad taste and choice the word “superior”, both posts prominently feature a declaration by general Tlass Jr., which received near zero second of attention by any of the many circles forming the real opposition to the mafia militia and is being hyped as a declaration of road-map and assurances through the traditional “I know-Syria” analysts in the US academia and press.
Both posts attempt to engineer opinion and both posts do display a lack of understanding, intentional or otherwise, about the seemingly stagnant, yet evolving situation in Syria. They also expose a lack of understanding of human nature. This is not because of missing facts, but for the machination of the facts in the interest of preserving the privileged status of those who ruled Syria by blood and gore for nearly fifty years.
Most tellingly, what the latter post ignores, which seems also to be a common deficiency among most US based analyses, usually written in favor of presenting those supporting Assad as future victims, is that there are no more privileges to have. The foundation of regime supporters enjoying special status, independent of their sect, was not power itself, military or otherwise, but the fear induced by the threat of exercising such power. In that sense, a thug can enjoy his privilege only in docile times when the hostility of the bereaved and oppressed is suppressed by this fear. This was only possible given that measures of violence remain personal and where examples are made through a limited, albeit, relatively huge number of people being brutalized by worst of the violence. The rest of the population has to be given a sense of deformed normalcy where accepting corruption, suppression, and despotism seem to be the safer option. It helps to throw in a bone of a central, larger than individuals cause to present the petty thief and murderer as a strong charismatic leader. These conditions would provide a wide margin for the privileged to use fear in relative safety and protection with minimal cost to themselves.
Fear is no longer. It has been replaced with open and courageous hostility, deep contempt, outright rejection, and tit-for-tat, albeit asymmetric violence directed against the regime’s privileged and their symbols. The current asymmetric military power and the wanton destruction and murder by the “Assad or we burn the country” has not helped in returning the clocks backward. On the contrary, the inhuman scale of the catastrophe wreaked solely by the ugly sectarian Assad-gang and their defenders has done exactly the opposite. It has exposed the limitation of the mindless violence in intimidating the will of the people once they have risen against the cheap and foolish ignoramus and his militia.
“Khelset” (crisis is over), Assad worshippers shouted more than a year ago. Today, they murdered 343 Syrians, many of whom were murdered in cold blood massacres. Everyone who still support this regime is accountable for their death.

You hit the nail right on the head, OTW, also beat me to it as that very characterization in the first line above by the learned professor was going to be the subject of a long comment of mine to post at SC before I got side tracked with entries from the usual contributors who either feed us cut and paste incomplete and quite deceptive information or those expounding their infallible views on how Syrians WILL, by George! vote in the new Syria, and don’t we dare disagree!
But unfortunately for Syria this last group of “Dictatorship of the Majority Sect” champions tends to give justification for people such as the professor’s views that “minorities” will need protection and should be really afraid for themselves in post-Assadist Syria, even to suggest that their being a minority should be compensated for by giving them special privileges as almost a right! But as I said you beat me to it
The best part of the post for me was this: “Professor Bob Bowker, from ANU’s Centre for Arab and Islamic Studies, says the Assad regime is capable of preserving itself, but the institutions of the state are being reduced to rubble, both figuratively and literally.”
If this so called professor knows anything about Syria, he should know that there are no institutions in Syria. There are buildings that are supposed to house the “institutions”, but there has not been functioning institutions in Syria in forever. Nothing really that we Syrians are upset about losing.
Good to hear from you, Sheila. We missed you.
Anything you can tell us about 7alab that we don’t know?
Reblogged this on Hikayat Shamiyya.
Excellent post. I think most of us are very tired of all the Talking-Headism going on regarding Syria, and the professoriate has not been immune to this (indeed has been a primary disseminator of nonsense).

Aleppo: City Market: more than 50 shops are on fire so far because of the Assad’s bombing of the old archaeological market!!
And FSA attempts to extinguish the fire are facing great difficulty because of the spread of the snipers on the roof of Al Kabir Mosque and difficulty to enter fire trucks to the heart of Aleppo

Dearest Zoo on SC has alerted us to Amal’s new article so I just thought to link here too for those rare souls who don’t venture over to SC, or if they do, they just skim over the post without reading the comments (could really be a good policy given the quality of the comments: either spam or total disregard to people’s intelligence). Zoo found something to use for his/her own ends in the article and so linked it. I still thank him/her for that.

I know that Qunfuz’ blog is on the list here up there on the top right, but just a note about his latest posts there, one regarding the Save the Children report and the other just before it about that stupid video that was used to murder innocent people. In the latter Qunfuz has linked a very painful, horrible video of a young man being tortured by Assadist thugs while asking him the same questions we have become familiar with “You want freedom? Here’s your freedom” and “Isn’t Assad your God? Admit he’s your Rabb”. Absolutely sickening and إis on par in its monstrous-ness with that other video of the 6 men tortured and then killed which was linked by me and then by Annie on SC. http://qunfuz.com/

A Letter from a Palestinian Refugee to a Syrian Refugee
by Iyad El-Baghdadi on Saturday, September 1, 2012 at 6:47am ·
By Ibrahim Jaber Ibrahim
Your mom might lose you in the fields, and it will be funny for a refugee to say in a conversation later that he lost his way. My friend, only the one who knew his destination is the one who gets lost; and your destination was just escaping death, and here you are undead anyway!
Don’t be scared, everything there at home stays the same, kitchen pots, kids toys, and the tree behind the window…everything stays the same. However, this morning, you have to start getting used to your new things: You are now a number in refugee records, news, committee’s meetings, endeavoring delegations, and in the poems of poets who benefit from the dead people in battles even more than undertakers.
The tent will be upsetting on the first night… and then in the first year, and then it will become friendly like a member of the family, but don’t fall in love with it like we did.
Don’t rejoice if they ever build you a health center or an elementary school, that’s not good news at all! Never get involved by asking for stupid demands like building small homes instead of the tents or having water pipes and electricity lines; this means that you’re starting to adapt… and this is death for a refugee… and this is his tomb.
Don’t train your kids to have patience, patience is the plot of the weak, and the plea of the abandoned and a refugee dies if he doesn’t look behind him twice at moments.
You’re not the son of ”there”, always remember this, you have a favor ”here” that can’t be betrayed, never sleep without listing its advantages to your kids, and tell them how your people died, and how they were slaughtered on TV channels because they didn’t clap after the speech. Tell them that you sleep between foreign trees, because you never wished to be fooled twice!
People will sell you to each other, that’s how politicians are, solidarity groups will come to you from all countries, you’ll become their electoral slogans.
They’ll use you when they’re seeking God, and people will work hard to visit you in Ramadan and Eids and religious events! Some will take photos of your tired and starving children and your wife who’s sleeping in the shade in order to be the subject of an award winning picture!
This is your new life: Love will break inside tents; a talented painter will be born, and a prostitute and a spy will be born too, but so will redemptive suicide attackers.
You’ll learn new languages and new feelings, and soon you’ll have an obscure relationship with exile, and one deceiving night you’ll feel it doesn’t anything more for it to be home, but soon you’ll notice: The trees here don’t grow green like they should, the salt isn’t salty, and people who passed away won’t forgive me, and then you look behind you twice!
Here is when your son – who has grown to be a man without you noticing – approaches to convey the memory and the dream that had killed your back.
Maybe, my friend, it will seem complicated in the beginning, but it’s obvious: You’re ”there” because ”here” is seedy, and maybe your absence will last longer than two days, but you’re not in a trip to seek a new identity, and you’ll never think about providing an electricity line to tent.
This is our mistake, when we said: The tent is too small and we need two extra tents!
My friend, don’t think of the issue unless you’re looking back! Remember also that you have turned your left cheek twice, so which cheek are you turning now?
Listen to me, I have a 63 years more experience in this ”job” than you: Don’t take pictures with Goodwill Ambassadors, don’t complain to them about how hot it is or about the pebbles you found in bread. Tell them that your problem is not emotional, and that an Angelina Jolie visit will not solve it.
And be careful not to ask for a better tent, as there is no tent better than another.

(see full article above)
Have you all seen the WIkipedia page titled “the Syrian Civil War”? While having a look through al-Mundassa al-Suuriya I saw the reminder to keep an eye on the Wikipedia pages for the Syrian revolution. I don’t think many will like how the revolution or uprising has been characterized in wiki.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syrian_civil_war
http://amjadofarabia.wordpress.com/2012/09/08/capitulation-of-a-revolution/
Otherwise, talk of the FSA laying down its arms is just a not-too-thinly-veiled plea by those whose will have been broken, for the revolution to surrender. I don’t judge people harshly if they feel they cannot carry the burden anymore, everyone has their own circumstances and pain-threshold. But I at least expect them to have the self-respect and decency to call what they are asking for by its proper name; capitulation and surrender to the Assad tyranny.
“Syria 2025 – A Forum for Engagement on Syria’s Future”
On November 16th and 17th, the global Syrian expatriate community is coming together to
envision how we can make an impact on Syria and help shape its future economic development.
Jusoor is delighted to invite you to join us in New York for this very important event.
Top reasons to join us in New York:
Learn: Come hear from some of Syria’s top experts, World Bank economists,
and some of the world’s most innovative companies on the challenges facing Syria
in the years to come and the highest priority set of things to get right in the coming
months and years. What role can the global Syrian diaspora play to accelerate
development? How can we partner with some of the world’s top companies and
institutions? Which countries provide the best example for us to learn from?
Make a difference: Roll up your sleeves and join a working group to
generate ideas to support economic development in Syria, both in the immediate term
and long term. The conference will feature working sessions on topics ranging
from (1) how to deploy technology creatively to support the education of the
hundreds of thousands of young Syrians whose education has been disrupted
to (2) creating a network of very strong Syrian Chambers of Commerce around
the world to support the economy once the situation stabilizes. Experts from
leading global companies and NGOs will join us in these sessions to support
debate and to partner in execution.
Meet: Syrians from around North America and the globe. We currently have
Syrian families, young professionals and students registered from around
the country, including LA, Houston, Detroit, Chicago, New York, New Jersey
and DC. We also have Syrians attending from Toronto, London, Riyadh, Dubai

Syria’s dictator, comes from a lineage of traitors.
He not only betrayed his people, also his neighbours and best friends. A first class, irreplaceable agent of Imperial powers in our midst. A phone call from Kissinger, promised our mass murderer, their servant, full protection from any coup d’etat under the condition that he stops the Syrian army from advancing towards Jerusalem! In return, Quneitra was returned, but the people were never allowed to return to their so called “liberated land”!? Why?
I do believe, that the so called Arab Spring is part conspiracy, part real. Not so in Syria. The bravery of the people, their sacrifices….is legendary. Now that things are out of control, one of this despicable family missions- is to do as much damage to Turkey as possible. His masters, destroyed Iraq, Pakistan, now they are drooling over Turkey. Hopefully they will not succeed. May the Turks deal with our “Beast”, wisely!
Why do I hate the cancerous Zionist entity as much as I hate the murderous traitorous Assads? They are no different. They are there to destroy, maim and pain humanity. I hate them with a vengeance. They both betrayed their people. Both are perverts.
Absolutely, in a million years the world will not produce this kind of evilness…using and abusing humanity for the service of slavery, to enrich the rich, by using and abusing the poor and helpless. Imperialism, is still well and alive. Yet, they both dare to say, they are protecting their people, when both are evil, doing nothing but abusing their people and creating friction, by seeding evil.
They fulfilled God’s promise by ethnically cleansing the inhabitants. While our “Beast” needs not to fulfill neither promises nor orders, he is acting …..
Finally, the FSA now owns secret weapons!

Bachmann: ‘We Must Ban Falafel’ in School Lunches
Minnesota Congresswoman Michelle Bachmann courted controversy today by claiming that falafel and other “jihadi foods” should be banned from school lunches in the United States.
….
“Chris, falafel is a gateway food,” responded Bachmann, “It starts with falafel, then the kids move on to shawarma. After a while they say ‘hey this tastes good, I wonder what else comes from Arabia?’ ”
“Before you know it our children are listening to Muslim music, reading the Koran, and plotting attacks against the homeland.”
“We need to stop these terror cakes now, before they infiltrate any further.”

Despite my strong allergy to all religions I can’t help but feel a great liking for this man. He reminds me of a dear uncle of mine who died before the catastrophe that is unfolding now in Syria, though I am certain he would have been one of the first to join the protests in the town where he made his home after leaving Damascus, a town that has been one of the hardest hit by the regime’s murderous aggression.
This Abuna is like they should all be ! He was in Brussels and we loved him. Already in Syria, when I read what Mar Moussa was publishing I found them very courageous.
Here he is translating for three young militant Syrians : http://youtu.be/luNz_HCiVkc
Syrians are asking why قدسيا a Damascene suburb?
Did the Slaughterer leave any village, any family, any city or stone…intact?
Everywhere, anywhere, with international impunity he is destroying a people and their culture.
All Syrians are paying heavily, nonetheless they are on the right path, a brighter future is ours to keep.

Ever since the very first bomb that exploded in Damascus (in Midan, I think) I have harbored and still cannot get rid of the suspicion that this Ansar al-Sunna /Nasrat al-Islam (such prolefiration of religious names and terms it makes one’s head spin) is a regime- created/manipulated entity that serves to enforce the regime’s claim that they are fighting “terror”. This is where I differ with the NCB, though I suppport their calls to the people not to support or condone such shady groups. Why would the garages of a bus station be targeted and how could that serve the revolution? From the very beginning I knew the day would come when the regime would employ these kind of tactics to sow fear in the hearts of the civilian population. The regime is delivering big time.
NZ
Have you got any inside information on that Jusoor organization you have presented above?
Maybe I am getting them wrong.
But reading their website made me feel I was looking at an elite club that is happy to keep the door propped open to the Assad regime.
I invite others here to look and see if they share my impression: http://www.jusoor-sy.org/
I got a vibe similar to reading something like a regime-foreigner “friendship club”.
If that’s not true, they need to do a major reality check and urgently get their ass into gear. Up the sophistication and cut out the saccharine stuff.
The stakes are too high for them and for Syria.
SL you are right. I have no inside info but looking at the likes I spotted some of my fb friends who are not in favour of the Revolution. Not that they are pro-Bashar either.
SL,
I did read your post and will respond in general terms, not specific to Jussoor.
Syrians, like all people, living under some of the worst dictatorial regimes, past and present, S. Korea, China, USSR, Iraq….grew up with fear, doubt, hands cuffed, muted, eyes wide shut…where to get bread, to feed our children, was the most discussed subject!? We doubt our next to kin before our neighbours or friends..who is an informant and who is an infiltrator was our biggest worries!? LIVING IN FEAR and UNCERTAINTY…THIS mentality needs to change. It is precisely why our young and old are getting tortured, maimed and killed with impunity. This regime with its supporters wants us to remain stagnant, while they suck our past, present and future.
There is one main INFILTRATOR in our midst, one main INFORMANT. ASS**s, the rest are the weak at heart..call them what you want… regardless, they act like the rest of humanity. When the rule of law is hijacked by the one that is supposedly there to provide and protect..
Jusoor, elitist? Maybe.. If education and clean wealth puts them in that group, I hope all Syrians will become an “elite club”! This is why Jussor was founded. From my understanding, this group is a non-political, non-religious organization. Was founded to build bridges between those Syrians who are outside the country (17 million) and those who are trapped inside Asses dungeons/educational system. The bright and the enlightened had no future inside the country. My understanding, that this organization’s aim is to provide an education first, and a promise by the students to return to the homeland, armed with knowledge to advance, not only, their country but the world at large.
A reality check is incumbent on us who are doing nothing. No Syrian family was immune from the wrath of the despicable Beast and Co., one way or another..
Personally, I have no time for a reality check, specially if I know that a couple of students are already in University reaping the benefits of knowledge, in one of the best institutions for technology.
My hope, is that these students, once they graduate, will not take for granted their success. I wish both, the students and the organization, uttermost success.
I blame you not! Let us learn to embrace one another, more. Let us encourage the success of one another a lot..After 43 hellish years, we have no choice but to move forward.
Thank you NZ, and I wholeheartedly agree your general assessments and comments about the nature of Syria under Assad.
BUT I think we all know that it is impossible to be non-political and neutral about Syria, especially if you are any form of intellectual.
I am also aware of the likelihood of “education and clean wealth” being highly subjective, giving us the Scheherezade Jaafaris of Syria and her peers strutting proud and smug in the west talking about the Syria of the future.
And the TONE of that site and the way it talked about Syria etc made me feel uneasy. They talk as if Syria has very few systemic and structural problems and the need to have a massive effort to build its institutions and economy. It was kind of eerie and confusing for anyone trying to get the point of what they were doing.
If that criticism of http://www.jusoor-sy.org/ is not true they need to be urged to clarify and lift their game and be less cutesy and “friendship club” in their statements. Otherwise those associated will have their future tainted.
They are also occupying airspace and resources that could be more professional and sophisticated in building bridges between Syrian expats and their homeland.
I think we all know the truth of this recent comment by ‘Tara’, a fervent Assad critic on SC: ”I think Jamil Hasan is the head of the air force intelligence. I went to the same university one of his children went to. We had to pass an oral exam. His/her test was how the father was doing, to convey the professor’s best regards, and to tell the father that my co-student scored 95%. This was his/her oral exam. No other questions were asked. The professor had no shame as the whole conversation occurred in front of me, and this was the Syria I ran away from years ago. Dominated by thugs who despite their education remained peasantry thugs.”
Being non political in the present situation is being for the statu quo.

So now it is also Helana Cobban who is telling us what we should have done and how wrong everything has been. The only thing that I don’t hear from these people (including Dr Manna) is the scenario -theirs- which they believed would have guaranteed the success of the revolution, this in spite of (or perhaps because of?) the benefit of hindsight, namely the ability to see clearly how the regime has responded at every twist and turn during the last 18 months. All we hear is a shame-less “I told you so”.

Michel Kilo:

Surviving this nightmare !
Not privy to official personnel…but all those who voice their opinions through the media, intentionally or not- insist on using the wrong terminology, reiterating ass** in describing what is happening in our beloved homeland Syria as “crisis or conflict” it is neither, nor.
Whoever is guiding Syria’s illegitimate regime, is doing a disservice to the mafia family and Syrians at large.
A popular Revolution, a Syrian revolt against tyranny and injustices inflicted on all Syrians, including his closest associates.
This revolution will stop only by toppling the regime and bringing the slaughterers to justice.
“crisis/conflict” it is not. It is a movement of the people who want to topple the Slaughtering family, faced with fire and destruction..
May God help humanity from the wrath of evildoers.. Amen
